History of Groundwork Denver

Groundwork Denver was incorporated as a 501c3 in October 2002 as an independent organization in the Groundwork USA network.

GWD was created in response to a feasibility study that found that while much of the City of Denver is known for its parks and well-maintained streetscapes, there are neighborhoods without the political clout or resources to develop this level of infrastructure.

A study of existing organizations found that GWD could fill a critical niche to engage residents in the planning process, and implement real, tangible neighborhood-based projects that improve the physical environment. Since its inception, GWD has focused on building partnerships and providing support to the diversity of Denver residents who want to improve their neighborhoods through community involvement and civic engagement.

Unlike other environmentally-focused organizations, Groundwork Denver builds partnerships to deliver programs and resources that help lower-income communities to not only make a wide range of environmental improvements, but also to build diverse community involvement, and develop leadership and job skills.

We have found that the interest in urban environmental improvements - ranging from tree planting, to toxic cleanup, to energy efficiency improvements, to transit-oriented design – cuts across income, ethnic, and language barriers.
