AmeriCorps NCCC and Summer of Service

Groundwork Denver has partnered with AmeriCorps NCCC and Summer of Service. Over the last two years. These teams of young people have provided Denver’s neighborhoods with hundreds of hours of service building trails, planting trees, and implementing energy efficiency measures. The 2008 participants in the Summer of Service – 100 youth age 14 to 17 – helped Groundwork Denver with the Porch Bulb Project in the Chaffee Park neighborhood. The youth canvassed 950 homes, swapping out 140 front porch bulbs from incandescent to compact fluorescent bulbs, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 16,800 lbs per year.

Groundwork Denver is hosting an AmeriCorps NCCC team of ten young adults from mid-February through mid-March 2009. The team has been trained in energy auditing, energy upgrade implementation, and the door-to-door Denver Climate Challenge approach. The team is working on these greenhouse gas emission reduction projects as well as graffiti cleanup and other neighborhood development projects. Partnering with Americorps NCCC gives Groundwork Denver the opportunity to have a huge impact at the neighborhood level while providing the Corps-members with unique opportunities to serve the community and learn job skills
