Photovoice: Atlantis Community

Groundwork Denver recently finished an exciting Photovoice project with Atlantis Community (www.atlantiscommunity.net). Atlantis Community is an organization that supports independent living for adults with disabilities. Clients in their day learning program took on the Photovoice project to tell their story about mobility in the community.

In order for us to get to the bus stop from Atlantis Community, we have to use the driveway and cross this busy street [Cherokee Street].  It’s dangerous because truck and car drivers don’t expect wheelchairs coming out from a driveway.  Snowy conditions make it more dangerous.

Because of construction the day we took these photos, cones blocked the sidewalk to the light rail station.  To get to the light rail station, we had to go all the way down to the other end of the sidewalk where the curb cut is.  Then we had to come all the way back on the street.  This was very tiring and took a lot of time.

A woman is stuck in the snow near the bus stop across from Atlantis.  The sidewalk had not been shoveled by residents 48 hours after a snowstorm.  We often choose not to leave our homes because we are afraid of getting stuck.  A person with a walker or cane would also have problems.

In this photo, a wheelchair is stuck in a hole in the sidewalk near the light rail station.  She needed help to get out.  These holes should be fixed.
